“Canada: Reaching Across the Pond in Times of Change”
Richard Charney, a senior partner in the Toronto office of global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright, will share his views on recent developments enhancing Canada’s trading and commercial ties to Europe and touch on regulatory considerations for doing business in Canada, including human resources regulations.
He will cover current events like the US exit from the Paris Climate Agreement (Canada has remained in) and tensions with the US and Canada on its own trade deals like NAFTA and softwood lumber that have increased Canada’s desire to strengthen its relationships with Europe. The recent EU/Canada trade deal is an example and will be discussed. In addition, Richard will give an overview of regulatory considerations for doing business in Canada, followed by a focus on regulation pertaining to human resources. In particular it will be explained how Canadian human resources laws differ from the US and have analogy to Europe, covering minimum standards, human rights, health and safety and labour standards.
