Congratulations to Houtimport Gras, winner of this years NCCC Business of the Year Award.

The Award was presented to Harry Gras by H.E. Ambassador Nolke during the NCCC Annual Luncheon on 17th November.
Houtimport Gras is a family owned company of which there are now 6 generations (Harry being the 5th).

The company started with 2 windmills to saw logs, but since 1917 they have focused on trade. They import softwood from Canada, including Western Red Cedar (BC). Although the majority of their timber comes from Canada, they also import from Scandinavia, Germany and the Baltic States, and more recently, a small amount from Russia.

Earlier this year, Harry was also awarded to the “Ridder in de Orde van Oranje Nassau” because of a lifetime of promoting the trade of national and international timber and advancing the use of sustainably produced wood.

Further congratulations go to @Restart_Network, this years winner of the NCCC Air Canada Young Professionals Award. Frederick Rustler is seen here receiving 2 tickets to Canada from Gina Verkouter of Air Canada.

Restart Network is a non-profit coding school based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, that makes tuition-free world-class education available to refugees, minorities and low-income students. They keep the program tuition-free thanks to a pay-it-forward model: for every student a company intakes as an intern, a donation of 5000 Euro is made to Restart Network that allows them to empower two more people.

Looking to their first international expansion, cities like Toronto and Montreal could host the perfect environment for a proof-of-concept bootcamp of 3 months. This Award would enable a scouting mission since they would like to probe expansion possibilities soon. In accepting the Award, Frederick said "We believe the Netherlands-Canada Chamber of Commerce to be a force multiplier where we can seek advice in support of our ambitions. In return, we hope the Chamber and its members find value in our proposition and the people we educate on a daily basis.

Our guest speaker this year was Bas van de Haterd and he really focused our minds on the theme of Talent & Technology.

As he explained, on average, the top 1% of your employees create 10% of your output. The top 5% creates 25% and the top 20% generates 80% of your turnover. Selecting the best talent is essential for your company - no matter the size. And yet we select people by the two means that science has not been able to attribute value too in identifying talent; a resume and a job interviewSo how do you recruit and select the best talent using the newest technology out there? Through examples and stories, he showcased some ways that new technology can help you recruit better people.

During the pre-lunch networking, members and guests were invited to taste some of Canada's bounty. Products from members Maple and More and Coastal Delight Fine Food and Drinks were available for sampling. Please visit their websites if you wish to purchase their products for yourself or as corporate gifts.
